Net neutrality is the idea that Internet service providers (ISPs) should treat all sites and data on the Internet equally (or neutrally). It’s basically non-discriminatory to those on the Internet who want to easily connect and communicate, whether it be for personal or business, without interference of a third party.
Lots of Internet users want an “open Internet,” or net neutrality. Obama came out as a proponent of an open Internet, saying that he endorsed the idea that the Internet become classified as a “common carrier.”
However, certain government officials think that the classification of ISPs as “common carries” do not protect it, but stifle it. As this article puts it, “this type of regulation delays innovation, creates uncertainty, and inhibits a lively marketplace.”
Then there are a few who say to even stay away from the idea of "net neutrality" because that isn't the real issue. The real issue is "preventing cable company fuckery."
